The Purpose-Driven Perspective of a Travel Occupational Therapist
For nearly a decade, Emily, an occupational therapist, has devoted her career to helping people regain independence, confidence, and the ability to engage in the everyday tasks that make life meaningful. With experience across skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehab, home health, and pediatric outpatient settings, she has crafted a path defined by compassion, curiosity, and continual growth.
And now, as a travel occupational therapist with Aequor, Emily has found a way to pair her passion for OT with her love of new experiences, new places, and new connections.
A Calling Discovered Early
Emily first discovered occupational therapy in high school while volunteering in a life-skills cooking class for students with special needs. A teacher noticed the ease and warmth with which she supported the students and encouraged her to explore OT as a career.
Like many people hearing the term for the first time, Emily wondered, “What is occupational therapy?” But once she looked into it, she knew she had found the perfect fit.
Since then, her commitment to the OT profession has only grown stronger.
Helping People Reclaim Their Daily Lives
While physical therapy often focuses on mobility, occupational therapy centers around function—helping people return to the meaningful activities of daily life.
For Emily, that might mean helping someone relearn how to get dressed after a stroke, prepare meals after an injury, or regain the cognitive skills needed to navigate their routines with confidence.
One of her most memorable moments came while working with a woman recovering from a severe stroke. More than a year after the stroke, the patient eagerly waved Emily over to show her a small but powerful achievement—movement in her thumb for the first time.
That moment led to renewed therapy, months of neuromuscular re-education, and ultimately, the return of meaningful function. The patient was eventually able to dress herself, create crafts again, and use a walker with improved independence.
Moments like these remind Emily exactly why she became an OT in the first place.
Finding Aequor Through Trusted Connections
Emily’s travel journey began through a colleague, a physical therapist who had traveled for almost ten years and loved it. When Emily asked which companies and recruiters she recommended, Aequor rose to the top of the list.
Working with her recruiter has been one of her favorite parts of traveling with Aequor. The clear communication, strong advocacy, responsiveness, and genuine care made Emily feel supported from day one. She values having a recruiter who works hard to secure the right contracts with the right details, and who truly understands her goals as a traveler.
A Fresh Perspective Through Travel Work
Transitioning from full-time work in a single facility to travel assignments has offered Emily a new lens on occupational therapy. Moving between facilities requires adaptability, resourcefulness, and the ability to evaluate patients with a fresh perspective.
She enjoys being the “new set of eyes” on a patient’s plan of care, bringing different approaches, renewed motivation, and creative problem-solving to help patients progress.
Travel work has strengthened Emily’s versatility as a clinician, expanded her skill set, and introduced her to colleagues and friends she may never have met otherwise.
The Best Part of Travel OT
For Emily, the greatest reward of travel therapy has been the people, both the clinicians she has worked alongside and the community members she has met along the way. Travel has allowed her to explore beautiful parts of the country, experience different healthcare settings, and continue growing personally and professionally.
The variety, flexibility, and adventure of travel work have given her a deeper appreciation for her field and for the people she serves.
Her Message to Future Travel OTs
For anyone considering travel occupational therapy but feeling uncertain, Emily offers this encouragement:
Travel therapy is a chance to stretch yourself, step outside your comfort zone, and experience growth you may never find otherwise. You’ll meet amazing people, see new parts of the country, and learn more about yourself as both a clinician and a human being.
And she’s never met a traveler who regretted taking that leap.
