Getting Licensed in Massachusetts: What Travel Nurses Need to Know

If you’re planning to take a travel assignment in Massachusetts, securing your state license is an essential first step. Because Massachusetts has its own licensure requirements and is not part of the Nurse Licensure Compact, nurses licensed in other states must apply by endorsement before they can begin working. The process requires careful planning, especially since the state does not offer temporary licenses. The good news? If you accept an RN assignment in Massachusetts through Aequor, our team will help cover the cost of your MA nursing license, making it easier and more affordable to take advantage of opportunities in the Bay State. Here’s what you can expect from the process:

Quick Facts About Massachusetts Nursing Licensure

Before you begin the process, it helps to understand how Massachusetts handles nurse licensure:

  1. Massachusetts is not part of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), so a multi-state compact license is not valid here.
  2. The state does not offer walk-through or temporary licenses. You must wait for full approval before practicing.
  3. License verification is processed through Nursys.
  4. All licensing is managed by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  5. Paper licenses are not issued; employers verify your license directly through the Board’s online system.

Because there is no temporary license option, starting your application early is essential, especially if you’re coordinating a travel contract with a specific start date.

Fees

Fees to expect as an RN:

●       Endorsement Application: $275

●       License Verification (Nursys): $30

●       Renewal Fee: $120

●       Late Renewal Fee: Additional $57

Important: Credit card is the only accepted form of payment.

How Long Does It Take?

Once all required materials are received, the permanent license typically takes 4–5 weeks to process.

Keep in mind that if additional documentation is required (such as for good moral character review), processing times may be longer.

Massachusetts License Renewal

Staying on top of renewal deadlines is essential for travel nurses planning future assignments.

●       RNs: Expire on your birthday in even-numbered years

If your license is issued within 3 months of your birthday, it will remain valid until the next renewal cycle. If issued outside that window, renewal will still be required during the normal cycle.

Additional Renewal Requirements:

●       15 contact hours per renewal period

●       Renewal period begins 90 days before your birthday

Important Things to Know

Before applying, keep these key points in mind:

  1. Massachusetts does not issue paper licenses. You may begin working once your license number appears on the Board’s website.
  2. Fingerprints are not required for endorsement.
  3. Applications must be completed within 1 year of starting them.
  4. Foreign-educated nurses may need to submit additional documentation.
  5. License status and verification are available online through the Board.

Licensure by Endorsement: Step-by-Step

1. Review Regulations

Applicants must read the statutes, rules, regulations, and policies. Your electronic signature on the online application confirms completion of this requirement.

2. Complete the Online Application

Submit your application through the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing portal.

3. Submit Education Documentation

●       Proof of graduation from a board-approved nursing program

●       Official final transcript from your first RN diploma/degree program sent directly to the Board

The Board accepts official electronic transcripts sent directly from the school or a secure service (such as Parchment or National Student Clearinghouse).

4. Provide NCLEX Verification

Submit evidence that you passed the NCLEX.

5. Verify Your Original License

Request verification of your original license through Nursys.
If your original state does not participate in Nursys, you must contact that state’s Board of Nursing to send verification directly.

6. Good Moral Character (GMC) Review

Applicants must demonstrate good moral character under Massachusetts law.

●       If you answer “yes” to criminal or disciplinary history questions, additional documentation will be required.

●       You must consent to a background check through the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) database.

●       Allow at least 8 weeks for GMC evaluation once all required documents are received.

7. Submit a Passport-Style Photo

A 2×2 color photo with a plain background taken within the last year is required before starting your online application.

8. Provide a Valid Social Security Number
