Honoring Special Education Teacher Ricardo: Making a Difference Every Day

This Teacher Appreciation Week, Aequor proudly honors Ricardo, a dedicated Special Education teacher who brings compassion, grit, and purpose to his classroom every single day. With over a year and a half of service through Aequor, Ricardo has exemplified what it means to go above and beyond—not just in academics, but in changing lives.

Ricardo’s journey to becoming a SPED teacher began with his own love of learning and the many teachers who impacted him along the way. From kindergarten through college, he was fortunate to have educators who went the extra mile—an influence that now shapes how he shows up for his own students. “I’ve always wanted to help others learn and succeed,” Ricardo shares. That desire fuels his daily mission with his 5th and 6th grade students.

One of the most meaningful moments of this school year involved a bright student with tremendous potential, but who faced significant distractions outside the classroom. After the student confided in Ricardo about being bullied for his worn-out shoes, Ricardo quietly stepped in. He offered the student a pair of gently used shoes from his personal stash of hand-me-downs. That simple act of kindness sparked a noticeable transformation. “The student got compliments from classmates, his self-esteem improved, and even his teachers saw an increase in participation,” Ricardo recalls. It’s just one example of how small gestures can make a big difference.

Ricardo sees his role not only as an educator but as a trusted adult who helps support students in and out of the classroom. He believes in building strong relationships with families, ensuring students feel seen, heard, and cared for beyond academics. “The greatest reward is when a student or family comes back years later to say thank you. That’s when you know you made a lasting impact,” he says.

Special education is a field that requires resilience, patience, and heart—qualities Ricardo embodies fully. He advises future educators that SPED is not a path to walk into lightly. “It’s not for the weak,” he cautions. Ricardo notes that a  background in elementary education or time spent with the special needs community can really help future educators understand what you’re getting into. Grit and patience are essential.

Ricardo credits Aequor with helping him grow and thrive as an educator, including how his experience has been beneficial for him and his family. “I’ve told others about my experience—it’s allowed me to maximize my value as a teacher.” He especially praises his recruiter, Megan, for being a true advocate. “Megan has been awesome. She understands my preferences and always has my best interest at heart.”

Every day, Ricardo walks into work with one goal: “Let’s make a difference.” Whether it’s with a word of encouragement, a pair of shoes, or a lifetime of support, Ricardo is making that difference—one student at a time.

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we at Aequor are proud to celebrate Ricardo and all the extraordinary educators like him. Thank you for your commitment, heart, and unwavering dedication to helping every child reach their potential.
