Why I’m Travel Nursing

By Kelsey Van Fleet
Hi, my name is Kelsey and I have been a nurse for nearly 3 years. I have worked the last 2.5 years in a tele/ICU unit dealing with a lot of heart and lung ICU patients. In that time, I grew from a new RN to a resourceful staff nurse who even precepts graduating nursing students. I have learned so much in this position, however I have grown comfortable. I decided that it was time to take the next step.

I needed a new challenge, and I LOVE to travel. I thought that travel nursing might just be what I was looking for. I looked into travel nursing, and was scared to try it at first. I am a very calm and collected individual, and I don’t love change. I decided to try travel nursing because I needed a change, and I wanted to test both my nursing skills, myself and my ability to adapt! So I joined an agency, told them what kind of assignment that I wanted, and waited for the perfect one for me.

I took a position in a telemetry ICU/post open heart unit. I have been there for three weeks thus far and I have already learned SO much. So far I have had a great experience, and everyone has been so nice in helping me tackle this new position. If anyone else is debating choosing travel nursing I would recommend just diving in. You will learn a lot about yourself and your abilities when you take an assignment. Not to mention you can go to some really neat places! I am excited to see where I go after this assignment. The possibilities are endless!
Thank you!
